  • Fueled by instinct

    Manic Readers Review
    4 out of 5 Stars

Fueled By Instinct is a very good, FBI thriller and romantic suspense all rolled into one exciting read! The sexual tension between Devin and Lane just adds to the readers heightened senses as they follow the progress of the story. There is treachery, greed, and danger surrounding the couple while they try to remain alive for Lane to testify and fight their attraction to one another. This is a bad time for any kind of relationship and they can’t possibly have a future. Devin is married to her job and Lane will probably be on the run from the mob for the rest of his life even if they do get the convictions. No one bests the mob and walks away unscathed.

Ms. Savage grabbed my attention, emotions, and pulse rate at the very beginning and sent me for an exciting ride through this story! If you have never read anything by Ms. Savage, don’t delay any longer; this story is a great place to start. If you are already a fan of Ms. Savage’s work, you don’t want to miss adding Fueled By Instinct to your list of titles.

Fueled by Instinct slams into action on the very first page and author Rebecca Savage maintains the pace through to the very end. Whether dazzling us with her tough-as-nails heroine Devin Ladue, an FBI agent who risks her life and job to exact revenge on her parents’ killer, or making us fall in love with her courageous hero, journalist Lane Steelman, Savage knows how to turn up the heat and keep it simmering.
Lane’s eyewitness testimony at the killer’s trial is threatened when a mob hit is ordered for him. Corruption in the highest levels of city government and a mole in the ranks of the FBI add to the danger. Devin is determined to protect Lane long
enough to testify despite the threat to her professional reputation, not to mention her self control.
Lane was smitten by Devin from his first sight of her on TV after her parents’ murder. Now she’s appointed herself his bodyguard and all he can think of is doing more than guard her body.
Even with the gender reversal in the expected roles of protector and protected, Savage deftly maintains the alpha of her hero. In Lane and Devin, she’s crafted two hot, tough leads with all the chemistry of Pitt and Jolie in Mr. and Mrs.
Smith. When they go on the run together in the effort to keep him safe and, at the same time, draw the mole out of hiding, the sexual tension between them is enough to singe the pages.
Along the way, the reader is treated to a tense thriller and the treat of Savage’s excellent dialogue and descriptive skills.
I was hooked and can’t wait to read her next work, Cloaked in Assassination. In fact, I’m on my way to buy it now.

Ms. Savage’s Fueled by Instinct is an extremely compelling story. The characters are enjoyable and Lane couldn’t have been easier to fall in love with. The pace of the book is fast, just as the characters have to move to keep one step ahead of their pursuers. The attraction between Devin and Lane is sizzling and keeps you longing for them to get together. Fueled by Instinct has earned a place on my keeper shelf. It doesn’t take instinct to grab this book, only the love of a good story!

Long and Short Reviews: 4/5 Books:

Murder is the prime motivator at the start of Savage’s Fueled by Instinct. Lovely Devin Elizabeth Ladue, vacationing FBI agent, is out to revenge the murder of her parents. Witness and simply knock-down gorgeous Lane Steelman is out to help solve the crime. Fueled by Instinct kicks off with more than its share of dry-mouthed suspense as Devin and Lane end up joining forces, whether that course of action be wise or not.

One hot summer romance probably won’t lead anywhere, so Devin resists temptation and tries to keep her mind focused on her goal. It helps that she believes Lane to be somewhat less than sincere, whatever physical attributes he happens to possess. It doesn’t help that she ends up entangled with him so physically; all in the line of duty, of course!

Lane has just as many doubts about her; maybe more. But then, there is that ‘primal, animalistic, and elemental attraction’ that they both succumb to, even as they each firmly decide against it. Lane is admirable, heroic, and incredibly attractive, but you can’t blame him for being put off by that tough outer exterior. After all – lovely Devin is an FBI agent.

There are many moments of suspense here, as Devin and Lane go after ‘the bad guy.’ There are threats, hints, clues, and assorted decisions made to resolve the earlier crime. They both know, or think they know, that the local mayor is at the center of the crime, but getting to him will prove dangerous.

More suspenseful is the tension between the two main characters, as they each struggle with their feelings for one another, assorted self-doubts, and trust issues. These conflicts are well done and suspenseful, if perhaps a little overdone. One wants to shout ‘all right already – how old are you?’ in a couple places, but then again, frustration is exactly what the main characters are feeling, too.

Dialogue was plausible, the characters well presented, and the sexual interaction more than satisfying. This is not a typical suspense, nor yet a murder mystery, and anyone expecting either of those might be disappointed. However, romance enthusiasts will enjoy this one.

    WRDF Review

    Reviewed by Lynda Warnock

Cloaked in Assassination is the second in a trilogy by Rebecca Savage.  I have read the first book Fueled by Instinct, and this second book definitely lives up to my expectations.  Ms. Savage is very skilled at writing romantic suspense, knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats and still manages to give you the happily ever after most romance readers crave.

CIA assassin Rene’s cover has been blown.  Ordered by an unknown boss to take out all past living presidents, the current president and one of the candidates for the upcoming election she knows she can’t handle this alone.  Warning her sisters that they could be in danger Rene sets out to make her plans to catch the “boss” and keep everyone else alive.  Asking for help is not in Rene’s vocabulary but she doesn’t have much choice in this one, there is too much riding on the success of her counter-mission.

Hunter is a secret service agent and ex-navy seal.  He’s had more than his share of clandestine missions and knows just the team to help Rene with this mission.  But nothing is as easy as it seems and trying to assist Rene is almost impossible, and falling in love with her is like running head first into a wall at 55 mph.  But that doesn’t stop Hunter and he’s determined to sway her to his way of thinking.

True to the book’s title, Rene was cloaked well and slipped in and out of places like the ghost she was trained to be. Born to due her duty to her country she definitely found her match and mate in Hunter.  But would it would take everything in her to take the chance on a relationship with him.

Ms. Savage delivers big with Cloaked in Assassination.  From the first page I was on edge, and just as good suspense should be with more than enough twists to put knots in your stomach.  I definitely recommend this story – as well as the previous story in this series. I look forward to the next book about the last of the triplets.

I really like the Ladue sister’s. They are completely loyal to their family and their country, they are tough and trained, and they are determined to succeed. Rene is obsessed with finding whoever is trying to blackmail her not only because they threatened her family but what they want done is treason. Rene gets a whole lot more than she bargained for when she chooses Hunter to help her with this job. Rene doesn’t want a man but if she were to look for one, Hunter is exactly what she’d want. He is honest, trustworthy, a leader, and as patriotic as she is. And Hunter has a fiercely loyal team to call on with more skills then Rene had imagined. The mission is dangerous, the team is talented, and the mad man is highly placed someplace in the government so the action is thrilling and intense. If you want an action packed, romantic suspense story, this one will not disappoint!

Ms. Savage really had me from the first page. I read the entire story in one sitting, not wanting to put it down until I knew the outcome. Of course it only whets my appetite for the next book which will be out later this month. The characters are feisty, sexy and addicting. I really loved this pair and I was sorry to see the story end. I hope they make an appearance in Ms. Savage’s next book. If you are a fan of romantic suspense Cloaked in Assassination is one you need to move to the top of your list!

Cloaked in Assassination by Rebecca Savage, whirls along at breakneck speed carrying the reader with Rene and the rest of the team as she fights to protect her family and the nation’s top governmental leaders.

Along the way, she and Hunter are drawn together through attraction and yet pulled apart by circumstances. As Rene continues the deadly game against all odds and the advice of everyone around her, Hunter fights to keep her alive.

This fast-paced novel proves difficult to put down as the plot weaves in and out of one climax after another; often moving faster than even Velocity can travel. Enjoy this red-hot page-turner.

Adrenaline-pumping, breath-holding action runs rampant in CLOAKED IN ASSASSINATION as Rene Ladue, a CIA assassin, finds herself trapped in an assignment that put her family at risk and goes against her love for her country.

Early on, Rene’s anger is belabored a little too much for me but it does propel the reader into the emotionally charged story that is a real page turner.

Rene, naturally a loner, realizes she must put together a team to set things straight if she is to save her family and not betray her country. Hunter Keller, a former Navy SEAL and secret agent, comes to the fore in her research. She decides to trust him as much as she can bring herself to trust anyone other than herself.

While they work to carry out the mission, their relationship becomes as volatile as the political situation they work to diffuse. Their early sexual encounters are primal, almost animalistic, making one wonder if that kind of out-of-control lust can ever turn to a happy-ever-after love. Their “…chemistry is strange- almost debilitating at times”.

The characters Rebecca Savage creates are a group of former SEALS and secret agents who love what they do, love the danger, the daring, and the winning. They carry out plans in a way that keeps one reading with rapt attention.

Mystery of who orders Rene to kill such important people drives the story and the suspense of keeping the ‘good guys’ alive while trapping the ‘bad guy’ make for exciting reading. In addition, the strong love that develops makes the reader give a satisfying sigh of relief after all the mayhem. GOOD READING!

Austin Canty is not your typical rich American. He is determined to survive the torture and make it out of this jungle. He knows Alicia doesn’t think much of him, until he gives information about the American drug dealer she has been hunting.

Alicia and Austin have heat and sparks coming between them from the get go. Being in the rough jungle does not slow down their desire for each other or their passion to bring down a drug dealer. Once she returns Austin to his home in the United States will Alicia be able to return to her jungle alone? Lori is a woman scorned who will do whatever it takes to clear her name. Joseph, her ex-fiancé, had framed Lori and she served time in prison for that man. Lori lost everything that ever mattered to her: her friends, family and her fiancé. No longer would she take it lying down. On a quest to clear her name, Lori moves to a small town to live in seclusion when incidents start occurring to make her change her mind about reopening her case. What she hadn't counted on, though, was

Sal, a devilishly handsome attorney who has Lori reconsidering love once again. Sal will stop at nothing to show Lori, he will be there and will not hurt her. Can a love for the two of them survive her past?

Lori's character really spoke to me. She was a strong willed, sassy, brassy woman who had been wounded right to her soul. She used defense mechanisms to help her cope through situations she thought might become detrimental to herself. She definitely had the walls up around her heart but then along came Sal. Sal had to be one of my favorite characters in the book. He was a man determined to persevere through whatever Lori had to throw at him. He knew there was more to Lori than just a hard hearted woman. He was always there at the right time for Lori and tried to show her how to love again. Lori and Sal's characters brought to the story a combination of love and suspense. It was a story of determination, challenge, compassion and intimacy on a level other than the physical. The secondary characters in this book, like the brothers, really made me feel the bond. Each had the others' back.

Coincidence gripped me from the first page, and I was reading just as fast as I could. The plot line was amazing and I did not see the twists coming. The end of the book was breathtaking and jaw dropping. It ended in the most perfect way.

Rebecca Savage should be awarded for her unique way of capturing the hearts of her readers with suspense and drama. I enthusiastically recommend you read Coincidence for a suspense-filled read that will take you to another time and another place. You can expect to experience a variety of emotions throughout Coincidence. This book was very well written with humor, action, conflict and some very hot love scenes. Coincidence will not disappoint!

I will be rereading this book often. I would love to see this book become a series, perhaps a book for each of the brothers. I have found myself thinking about this book when I am not reading it and I love it when a book can do that to me. I was intrigued as I watched the friendship between Sherri and John develop into something so much stronger. Each had so many issues to overcome but together, anything was possible. I really bonded with the characters and their bond was unbreakable. Neither could live without the other.

Ms. Savage has written a book that just nails domestic abuse to a tee! I felt the fear in Sherri's character as well as the hopelessness both Sherri and John felt. Combustion was a compelling, fun and thrilling read with exceptionally steamy love scenes. From the beginning to the end, Combustion kept me on the edge of my seat! Combustion is an invigorating tale of two characters trying to overcome their pasts and look toward the future. John must get over the loss of a past lover and Sherri must find her courage and regain her confidence. The love scenes are sweet, but passionate. John takes his time and makes sure that Sherri is healing before making a move, but Sherri becomes impatient waiting on him. Ms. Savage has written a beautiful, believable story that once again proves that love can overcome all things.

    COMBUSTION by REBECCA SAVAGE

Sherri Marconi-Sandoval is a 25 year old, petite red head, brought up in a loving Italian home, and is an only child. She thought she met the man of her dreams in George Sandoval.

George Sandoval is a handsome, filthy rich businessman with major connections throughout the community. He also possesses another side of himself that no one knows about.

After a whirlwind romance, Sherri married George after knowing him only 3 months, but before the ink dried on the marriage license, George began to show his true colors. He began beating Sherri and forcing her to perform her “wifely duties,” all the while threatening to kill her and her family if she ever left him.

The final straw comes with George beating Sherri within inches of her life, leaving her for dead, and setting fire to their home...with Sherri still inside. So, with money Sherri stashed away for months, she leaves George, beginning the true hell of her life.

Bouncing from motel to motel, having alienated everyone she knows and loves, Sherri continues to run from George and his goons. Eventually, she finds herself at a women’s shelter as a volunteer nurse. Upon the recommendations of others at the shelter, she answers an ad for an apartment; the landlord is the owner of the women’s shelter, a downright saint and gentleman, John Tarentino.

John Tarentino is a well off, gorgeous firefighter with a few skeletons of his own. John has an internal need to help and protect everyone around him, especially a particularly beautiful red head with serious trust issues in regards to the male species.

With George’s relentless attempts to get Sherri back, or kill her, John finds himself falling hard for Sherri. But will she ever allow herself to trust him, allow him to love her completely? Better question, will Sherri stay alive long enough for John to try?

Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens every day in the real world. If only every woman had a John Tarentino to care about her, protect her, and prove that not all men are bad. There is a shining knight out there for every girl. Never give up and always believe in yourself.

Rebecca Savage shows a special talent for making you feel as if you are living the hell that Sherri Marconi-Sandoval is living; feeling her pain, both physical and emotional. My eyes even welled up at one point, which is not an easy accomplishment. Her attention to detail, making scenes come alive on the paper, is incredible. This is a remarkably well written story of courage, never giving up on life, and holding onto hope for a real life with real love. A definite recommended read.

    Review:

Sherri Maroni needs freedom. She is desperate to run away from the pain and love. Well she thought it was love but her marriage was more like a prison. Each day she prays for one more day of life. A life where there is no pain, bruises and maybe for a way out. Sherri knows that a man who will protect and love her truly doesn't exist, especially in her life. Yet when she rents John's guest room she is confused. Where was he when she married her ex-husband? All these years she lived in fear and in pain. Then John appears. He is everything she had dreamed of before her marriage. Her ex-husband has eluded her mind with nothing but unhappiness and no hope of ever breaking free from his hold. Can she runaway from the fear, pain and the violence for a future with John?

John has shielded his heart from women. Ever since he failed with protecting Amy, a close friend of his, he feels like he needs to protect everyone he can. When Sherri enters his life, to rent his place, he feels like the air got kicked out of him. Not only does he want to help her, but he wants to win her trust and love. He knows very little of her but knows for a fact that she is a woman who has seen and felt pain in her life. More than ever he wants more than her trust and a life with her forever. Her deadbeat of a husband is still hounding her and hurting her. John knows Sherri belongs in his life and he will do everything he can to not fail her like he did with Amy. Can John prove to Sherri that they belong together and that everyone around her does not die?

Sherri and John are two people who just like the title combust with so much sexual chemistry it blows your mind away. These two are perfect for each other it is hurt to see them separate. Sherri needs a man like John to show her that true romance and love do still exist. John is like your modern day knight in shining armor. He will protect Sherri as much as he can even if it means sacrificing his own life.

I loved Combustion and applaud Rebecca Savage for an awesome piece of fiction. Combustion is definitely a recommended read and top pick.

    *Review by Smexy Books*

Jeni Campanelli just wants to go home. She's tired of the drunk people hitting on her at the night club, Carpathia. She gives out her excuses to her friends and heads to her car, but going home is not on the agenda for Jeni this night. A man jumps out of the shadows and the next thing Jeni knows she is gagged, blindfolded and tied up somewhere very dark. Worse, she hears others sobbing and crying around her. She doesn't know she is underground, left to die.

Meanwhile, right above Jeni, Nick Tarentino, a homicide detective, is out with his brothers. It has been one year since his fiance, Isabella, was brutally murdered while leaving Carpathia and Nick is here to lay flowers on the spot she died. Nick has not coped well with her death. Anger, regret, and rage swirl around him in an unending attack.

As Nick is about to leave, he hears a noise - a faint crying. He soon realizes it is coming from the man hole. Removing the cover, he finds a terrifying scene - seven women tied up, one dead, many close to starvation and dehydration.

Since Jeni had only been down there for a few hours, she is the most capable person to answer Nick's questions. Nick can't help but notice the similarities between Jeni and Isabella. He also can't help the physical lust he feels when looking at her. It makes him feel guilty but his need to protect her overrides all else, and he demands that he stay with her until the serial kidnapper is arrested.

Nick learns that Jeni is very smart, calm and quite funny. They have lots to talk about, although Nick refuses to say anything to her about Isabella or his connection with Carpathia. Jeni can't help notice Nick's low slung jeans (that is the only way to wear them!) and his fierce determination to keep her safe.

When another victim is released from the hospital, Sarah, and doesn't feel comfortable going home to her abusive husband, Jeni takes her in for a night before Sarah can make arrangements to move in with her sister. This proves to be a beneficial move, because Sarah's house, including her husband, goes up in flames after a massive explosion. The kidnapper is angry, and no one is safe.

After the kidnapper calls Nick while he is at Jeni's house and tells him he has another woman underground, Nick knows this guy is not going to give up. Nick must rely on his detective skills while coping with his intense feelings for Jeni - or else his hope for a new future may be taken away just as fast as it was given to him.

Consequences was a very enjoyable read. Rebecca Savage weaves in a very tense, action filled story with a very hot romance and does it in a way where neither overpower the other. The crime is dark and the details are gritty. Throughout the story we get glimpses into the kidnapper's journal which are creepy and will give you a shiver. Although the crime itself was dark, Rebecca Savage adds lighter moments with humor from Nick's brothers. Nick himself, would probably have lost his way if his brothers had not been there for support.

When Nick develops feelings for Jeni, the night he was putting flowers on the ground for his dead fiance, I felt it to be a little rushed. Here is a man who is still completely devastated a year after his fiance died, and then he sees a woman and has feelings for her. However, maybe Jeni is what he needed. He was stuck in a cycle of guilt for what happened that night to Isabella, and maybe Jeni is just what he needed to escape those feelings and start moving forward with his life.

Nick is one big alpha male and his need to protect overrides all else. Although Nick and Jeni had an immediate physical reaction, I liked how their stress of the situation was played out. Tempers flared, anger was spouted. Nick's emotions were so volatile, he couldn't bring himself to even admit to Jeni one detail about Isabella. Jeni knows Nick is hiding something big, and yet she knows his emotions are so fragile with the kidnapper still on the loose, she pulls back and comforts instead of confronts. The romance scenes were verra hot and spicy and as I mentioned earlier, there was just the right amount.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from Rebecca Savage.

Nick is well on his way to depression, or maybe he’s just pulling out of it. His fiancé was murdered one year ago, and he’s sitting on the street where the murder happened. It’s the middle of the night. He hears a noise, and is surprised to discover seven bound and gagged women, one of which has perished. He’s a homicide detective. It’s his job to find the killer, before it’s too late and the perpetrator of the crime finishes what was begun.

Jeni Campanelli is partying with her friends at a St. Louis nightclub. While her friends are having a great time, she’s not. Deciding she’s had enough, she heads out to her car alone but never makes it there. She wakes up to find herself completely wrapped in tape, including her mouth and eyes. She has a feeling that she’s not alone.

Homicide detective, Nicolas Tarentino is back revisiting the site where his fiancée, Isbella was killed. She was shot in the head and then her car was set on fire. Police assumed it was a gangland killing.

Close to the previous crime scene, Nick finds Jeni and some other women tied up and dumped in a sewer.

Nick and Jeni feel an immediate connection to one another. Although Jeni is an independent woman, Nick feels he has to protect her until they can find the person responsible for the crime.

I’m a big fan of romantic suspense and woman in jeopardy novels and I really liked the plot. It had some very tense, edge-of-your seat moments. I also very much enjoyed the characters of Nick and Jeni. I sensed they were going to make a great team, not only for solving the case, but in the romance department too. The other characters are well drawn and the dialogue very natural sounding. However, there were two things that stopped me from giving this story a 4 book rating. One was that there was too much back story presented in the first few chapters. I would have preferred to learn about Jeni and Nick’s background gradually as I got to know them. Also, the person responsible for the crimes keeps a journal and their reasons for being evil are known too soon. As a result, I guessed who was responsible for the crimes as soon as they were introduced. I’ll be fair to the writer, as I do read mostly mystery and suspense there aren’t too many books that can fool me until the final pages, so other readers might not guess as quickly as I did.

Regardless, I like Savage’s style and would definitely read more of her work. If you like a sexy romantic suspense, I’d say it’s absolutely worth a read.
